If you’re planning to visit the Taj Mahal from Delhi, one of the first things you’ll need to decide is how you want to travel to Agra.
The two easiest options are train or private car.
Both are good choices, but they suit different types of travellers. Here’s what we would suggest based on the kind of trip you’re planning.
Delhi to Agra by Train
For travellers who mainly want to get to Agra quickly, the train is a very good option.
There are several trains connecting Delhi and Agra, including fast services that can make the journey in around two hours, depending on the train and schedule.
A train makes sense if you’re travelling independently and already have your Agra sightseeing planned.
You can take an early train from Delhi, reach Agra in the morning and then arrange local transport to visit the Taj Mahal and other attractions.
It’s also a good option if you’re travelling light and are comfortable managing the different parts of the journey yourself.
Choose the train if:
You prefer travelling independently, want a quick journey and don’t mind arranging your transport and sightseeing separately once you reach Agra.
Delhi to Agra by Private Car
If you want the day to be simple and comfortable, we’d recommend a private car.
Your driver can pick you up directly from your hotel in Delhi and take you straight to Agra. Once you’re there, the same vehicle stays with you for your sightseeing and can take you back to Delhi afterwards.
This is particularly useful if you’re visiting the Taj Mahal as part of a same-day trip.
You can leave Delhi early, visit the Taj Mahal, continue to Agra Fort and other attractions, stop for lunch or a break when you want, and then head back to Delhi.
You also don’t have to plan your day around train timings.
Choose a private car if:
You are travelling as a couple, family or small group, want door-to-door travel and would rather have the entire day arranged around your schedule.
What If You Want to See the Taj Mahal at Sunrise?
For a sunrise visit, we’d strongly recommend a private car.
The early start is much easier when your driver is picking you up directly from your hotel and taking you to Agra.
After visiting the Taj Mahal, you can continue with Agra Fort and other sightseeing instead of having to work around another set of transport arrangements.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
If you’re simply looking for the fastest way to reach Agra, take the train.
If you want a comfortable, flexible day where transportation and sightseeing can all be arranged together, choose a private car.
For families, couples and travellers visiting Agra for the first time, we’d personally recommend the private car. The convenience of being picked up from your hotel and having the vehicle available throughout the day makes a big difference.
