For many travellers, Agra means one thing: the Taj Mahal.
And of course, you should see it. But if you leave Agra immediately after your Taj Mahal visit, you’re missing a lot of what makes the city interesting.
Agra was once at the heart of the Mughal Empire, and its history can still be seen in its forts, tombs, gardens and old neighbourhoods.
So if you have a few extra hours in the city, here are some places worth adding to your Agra itinerary.
1. Agra Fort
Just a short distance from the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is probably the first place we would recommend visiting after the Taj.
The massive red sandstone fort was developed extensively by Emperor Akbar and later became an important residence for other Mughal emperors.
Inside, you’ll find palaces, courtyards, mosques and halls with a mix of Mughal and other architectural influences.
One of the most interesting parts is the view towards the Taj Mahal from within the fort.
If you only have time for one additional monument after the Taj Mahal, make it Agra Fort.
2. Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb
Often called the “Baby Taj”, this smaller marble tomb is located on the opposite side of the Yamuna River.
It is much smaller than the Taj Mahal, but that’s exactly what makes the visit different.
The monument is known for its detailed marble inlay work, delicate screens and intricate decoration.
It is also believed to have influenced some of the architectural ideas that later appeared in the Taj Mahal.
It doesn’t take very long to visit, so it’s easy to include if you have a few extra hours in Agra.
3. Mehtab Bagh
Want another view of the Taj Mahal?
Head to Mehtab Bagh, a Mughal-era garden on the northern side of the Yamuna River.
The garden sits directly opposite the Taj Mahal and gives you a completely different perspective of the monument.
It’s particularly nice around sunset when the light begins to change over the Taj.
If you’ve already photographed the Taj from the main complex, this is a good place to get a different shot.
4. Fatehpur Sikri
If you have more time than just a few hours in Agra, consider adding Fatehpur Sikri to your itinerary.
Located outside Agra, the historic city was built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century and served as the Mughal capital for a relatively short period.
The complex includes impressive buildings, courtyards and gateways, with Buland Darwaza being one of its most recognisable structures.
It works particularly well as part of a Delhi–Agra–Jaipur journey because it sits on the route between Agra and Jaipur.
5. Agra’s Mughal Heritage
Agra isn’t just about individual monuments.
Take some time to notice the city’s older areas, traditional markets and the architecture around its historic centre.
You can also find local handicrafts, marble inlay work, leather goods and other products that have long been associated with Agra.
If shopping isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You don’t need to spend hours in the markets. Even a short walk through the older parts of the city can give you a better feel for Agra beyond its main monuments.
How Much Time Do You Need in Agra?
This depends on what you want to see.
If you have one day
A good itinerary could include:
Taj Mahal → Agra Fort → Itimad-ud-Daulah → Mehtab Bagh
You won’t have to rush excessively, provided the day is planned properly.
If you have two days
With an overnight stay, you can slow things down and add places such as Fatehpur Sikri or spend more time exploring the city.
You can also visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise and use the rest of the day for Agra’s other attractions.
Is Agra Worth Visiting Beyond the Taj Mahal?
Definitely.
The Taj Mahal is the reason most people come to Agra, but the city’s history goes much deeper than one monument.
The combination of Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri gives you a much better understanding of the city’s Mughal history.
And if you are already travelling from Delhi to Jaipur, Agra fits naturally into a Golden Triangle itinerary.
